The Sidama State in Ethiopia celebrates Fichchee the Sidama Lunar New Year. Fichchee occurred on 5th April 2024. The next morning, 6th April 2024 was the first day of the New Year known as Cambalaalla. On the day of Cambalaalla, children play in their villages as groups and move from one house to another echoing Ayiidde Cambalaalla, Happy New Year. Those in the house respond by uttering ” Iille”. Happy New Year and reach from one New Year to the next.
Fichchee is a Lunar Calendar the date of which is determined by Sidama traditional astrologists known as Ayyaanto by observing the relative positions of constellations of stars and moon. Fichchee has been celebrated in Sidama for thousands of years.
Fichchee was registered in 2015 by UNESCO as the World Intangible Cultural Heritage.
